Türk Telekom and Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier Agree on 5G SA Low-Latency Roaming Trial

Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier and Türk Telekom have partnered to jointly explore 5G Standalone (SA) roaming based on two trial scenarios. For the first time, the partners will implement a 5G SA low-latency roaming regional breakout trial to advance mission-critical IoT applications. The Proof-of-Concept (PoC) will also include testing of Hosted Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) connectivity.

Within this PoC environment, both partners want to address operators’ needs for latency-critical applications with minimal investment. Operators will be able to expand their core network to different locations and thus allow regional breakout in a different country or continent with minimal effort. Regional breakout mitigates current operator concerns when rolling out local breakout architecture.

Nicholas Nikrouyan, Vice President, Voice & Mobile Solutions at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, said: “Thanks to its modular architecture, 5G is designed to enable easier service integration and functionality exposure. In the past, implementing a regional breakout solution over 4G always required an integration project between the visited and home network. Now, with 5G, we can do this modularly, and offer regional breakout in a totally transparent way to the visited network and with minimum impact to the home operator. We already offer regional breakout solutions on 4G, with locations set up across the globe. Our new PoC environment will serve to advance low-latency roaming even further.”

Testing 5G Hosted SEPP Connectivity

As part of the PoC trial, Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier and Türk Telekom are also setting up a 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection between their networks via a Hosted SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy) interconnection as a trial environment. Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier’s Hosted SEPP enables the communication between the operators’ SEPPs by offering mediation and proxy functionality in combination with the necessary end-to-end security integration.

5G Roaming Support for Early Movers

The trial with Türk Telekom is part of Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier’s innovative 5G roaming environment which allows early movers to trial and scout their roaming needs in any 5G implementation scenario before making strategic decisions. Within the environment, there are currently four different trial areas available: 5G signaling and security, value-added services for 5G roaming, network slicing for roaming, and regional and local breakout.
